[Winter Sports] [Figure Skating] [Cross Country Skiing]
[Downhill Skiing] [Snowboarding] [Ice Hockey]
Have you ever been drawn to a new activity you've never tried before, but you don't know how to get started? "Everyone is an Olympian" will introduce you to some of the winter sports you'll see during the Olympics and Paralympics, tell you how you can get started, and offer tips on equipment, fitness and safety. We are not suggesting that all Americans should aspire to be competitive athletes. But everyone can become a champion in fitness — someone who makes a lifetime commitment to be physically active for overall good health.
PRESIDENTIAL SPORTS AWARD
Do you need help sticking to January's New Years' resolutions? Then think about the exhilaration of riding to the top of a mountain to survey the winter panorama, then skiing downhill over that same landscape; imagine gliding across a peaceful, snow-covered meadow on cross-country skis or hiking on snowshoes with your entire family along for the outing. How about the pleasure of holding hands as you whirl around the ice skating rink with someone special? Now go for it!!
To help motivate you to try winter sports, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS) offers the Presidential Sports Award (PSA). Since 1972, PCPFS has offered the award to motivate Americans to become and remain active and fit through regular participation in a variety of activities and sports.
In 2002, as the PSA celebrates its 30th year, we would like to place the spotlight on the fitness achievement of winter sports participants. You can earn recognition from the President of the United States by participating in Alpine (downhill) skiing, Nordic (cross-country) skiing, ice skating, ice hockey and snowshoeing. These winter sports are among over sixty activities included in the program.Anyone age six and above is eligible to earn the PSA. The award itself consists of an emblem or patch in a particular activity and a certificate signed by the President, recognizing a participant's fitness achievement. There is a charge of $5.00 per individual award. If a parent/guardian and child/dependent complete the program together, an additional Family Fitness strip is sent along with the emblem at no additional cost.
