- Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans - Recommendations that children and teens be physically active for at least 60 minutes five day per week. For children, the 60 minutes of activity can be done in smaller periods of time over the day. Some of that time may come from moderate physical activity offered in schools and classrooms through physical education (PE) classes. Research shows that not only are physically active youth more confident socially, but they also perform better academically.
The Guidelines recommend that adults do a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity five days per week. Sixty minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity activity per day will help adults avoid gradual weight gain. Physical activity can be done in smaller periods of time over the day. - Adherence to the 2008 Adult Physical Activity Guidelines and Mortality Risk
- Study finds that meeting the recommendations for aerobic activity is associated with substantial survival benefits, especially among the population having chronic conditions. While strengthening activities by themselves did not appear to reduce mortality risks, they may provide added survival benefits to those already engaged in aerobic activities. - School Policies and Practices to Improve Health and Prevent Obesity: National Elementary School Survey Results
- Examines elementary school policies and practices relevant to nutrition, physical activity and obesity prevention during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years. Findings are based on surveys of administrators at public and private elementary schools and represent about 21 million K-5 students for each year.
