MESSAGE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE
PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS

During National Physical Fitness and Sports Month ("May Month"), on behalf of President George W. Bush, I ask all Americans to share our vision: a healthy, physically ac- tive and fit nation of citizens of all ages and backgrounds, boys and girls, men and women alike.

The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has a unique role within the federal government -- to as- sist the President and the Secretary of the U.S. Depart- ment of Health and Human Services in promoting physi- cal activity and fitness, including sports participation, for all Americans. We are fortunate that the President him- self "walks the talk." For those who say they have no time to be active, we answer that the man who is argu- ably the world's busiest person understands how impor- tant it is to move for health and makes time for physical activity in his daily life.

Our mission for 2002 and beyond is to help our seden- tary nation "get fit FAST." FAST is the acronym we've adopted to keep us focused so that all our projects and partnerships accomplish one or more of four objectives: 1) to Facilitate the public's awareness and understanding of the importance of movement for health; 2) to Activate Americans by developing and enhancing opportunities and incentives to live a physically active life; 3) to Sup- port our people in their efforts to be physically active on a daily basis by providing access to the latest research and guidance, and cultivating opportunities for safe and easy access to community facilities; and 4) to Transform our nation from a sedentary population prone to health problems resulting from physical inactivity into a nation of active, healthy people.

Our  priorities and goals for the coming year and beyond  include:

! Increase awareness of the health benefits of daily phys- ical activity;

! Increase the number of Americans of middle school age and above who engage in 30 minutes of daily physical activity, including seniors, people with disabilities, and people with chronic diseases and health conditions;

! Increase the number of children who are active 60 min- utes a day;

! Increase opportunities for Americans to be physically active in schools, in the workplace and during leisure time by developing and supporting public and private sector initiatives that include quality programs and re- sources for physical activity;

! Promote leisure time physical activity by increasing the availability of and access to community facilities (school gyms and tracks before and after hours; walking, hiking and bicycle trails, indoor and outdoor recreation areas and centers);

! Provide adequate safety/security measures in parks and recreation areas;

! Encourage sports participation and promote the values of good sportsmanship among youth, parents, coaches and teams.

The President's Council will encourage and assist Ameri- cans to become physically active and fit with our out- reach and education efforts and our motivational pro- grams. But only with a commitment from individual Americans to live actively — to move for their own health and that of their family members, friends, co- workers, and communities — can we realize our vision. With this in mind, I ask you to sign a CONTRACT TO MOVE FOR HEALTH.  You can sign the contract as an individual or on behalf of your family, worksite, organi- zation, group, or community. We've also included a Physi- cal Activity/Fitness Log.

I wish you success and encourage you to E-MAIL US with your ideas and successes. With your help and dedication, we can create a healthier, physically active and fit Amer- ica as FAST as possible.

Sincerely,
