The YMCA of Pawtucket, RI founded in 1889 is one of the oldest fitness organizations in the nation, with branches in Lincoln, Coventry, Central Falls, Cumberland and Pawtucket RI are proud to be a part of the 50th Anniversary Partner to Get America Moving.  The mission of the YMCA is - we build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.  As we enter our 116th year and complete the $8 million dollar renovation to our historic YMCA, we feel a strong bond to this celebration.  All 13 of our afterschool and childcare sites, which amounts to 1250-1300 children taking part in our FIT KIDS program.  The President's Fitness Challenge is the means in which we test our participants fitness.  Since our inception of this focused endeavor to involve children in age appropriate, active games and wellness education; over 4,000 children have participated.  In the first four years of the program, the percentage of children who tested as "fit" increased from 21 percent to 47 percent. This is nearly double the national average. A very large portion of this group is made up of Hispanic and non-white population, which in our area have historic obesity and wellness issues. Our goal is to reduce obesity, make all kids "fit" and enhance their success in school.
