Rock Your Park During National Park and Recreation Month

Encouraging Americans to get Active and Play in May

With beautiful summer weather and five full weekends, there is no better time to celebrate National Park and Recreation Month than July. Park and recreation areas are proven to improve your physical and mental health and well-being while contributing to the overall welfare of your local community.

Parks provide many recreation activity programs, athletic leagues, special events, arts programs, and environmental education programs, ensuring that all Americans have access to safe, affordable physical activity opportunities.

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association Exit Disclaimer (NRPA) has celebrated July as the official National Park and Recreation Month. This year's theme, Rock Your Park, offers many ways for you to get involved and see, firsthand, how parks and recreation bring enjoyment to your life and help you get physically active.

During National Park and Recreation Month, the NRPA wants you to get involved by submitting the Take the Five in July Park Pledge Exit Disclaimer and commit to getting outdoors during the five full July weekends – five Fridays, five Saturdays, and five Sundays. You can also Rock Your Park and show the world – or at least the online community – by entering NRPA's 2011 Flash Mob Contest Exit Disclaimer.

Outdoor recreation is a great way for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to get moving and learn about the natural world around them. From walking, biking, or hiking in a park to paddling a canoe or enjoying a healthy picnic with family and friends – there are dozens of fun and easy ways for you to enjoy parks and recreation facilities in your own community. Let's Move Outside provides great tips and resources for getting active in America's great outdoors. While you're out and about, you can also receive special recognition for being physically active by completing the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award Exit Disclaimer (PALA).
